SUMMARY: Before the NFL Draft, Titans Offensive Coordinator Norm Chow pulled for his team to take Matt Leinart. But after two minicamps, Chow knows Young a lot better and likes what he sees. "The strides have been monumental," Chow said. "He is every bit the athlete you thought he was, but he has some good quarterback skills as well. The thing about Vince is he's not an athlete playing quarterback. He is a quarterback who is a good athlete. There is a big difference." Young has already pushed ahead of Matt Mauck as the backup behind Billy Volek. At this point, the Titans only expect to see improvement. "He is throwing much better in the pocket," Coach Jeff Fisher said. "He is making instinctive throws down the field, back shoulder, away from the coverage and so on. We have seen steady improvement and we expect to continue to see that." Young is putting in extra time both on the field and in the classroom. Fisher has hinted Young may even start a preseason game.

I don't know if this isn't just a confidence booster for Young or if Mauck is that bad. It certainly looks like the Titans won't consider bringing in a QB.

Did you expect Mauck to stay ahead of Young all offseason and into preseason? I didn't.

Hope the need for a vet never arises.

Yes, I expected the Titans to keep Young at #3 at least until after training camp/preseason for two reasons. First, it takes all the pressure off him. Second, it keeps options open to bring in a vet if the preseason shows Young isn't ready.

No way Young could lead the team if Volek went down. So why make him the #2?

I'm not sure I agree with making him the #2 already unless they thought he needed a confidence booster, but who knows, maybe they do feel he is ready to step in if Volek goes down. I kind of doubt it, but they're the coaches.

One thing this says for sure, Matt Mauck sucks. Wonder how things are going for the Texas Tech kid?

You said you doubted VY could lead the Titans...well how would mauck fair leading us???
At least Mauck has more than two weeks of mini-camp under his belt. Do you honestly think Young knows more than 25% of the offense right now?

If Mauck or Young have to lead the Titans, they're in deep trouble early in the season.

I think Mauck has been that bad and I wouldn't be surprised if we bring in some competition for the #3 spot. If someone gets cut that looks to have more potential than Mauck I think they consider the switch. By opening day Young should have enough of the offense digested to play as well as Mauck anyway IMO so if Volek goes down Young might as well play even if he isn't quite ready.

I agree Jeff if VY has to play at least early or Mauck has to play for any length of time we are in deep trouble. I do think we will bring in a vetern QB but not Collins. Several teams have more QBs than they can keep and when they start cutting we can pick someone up. The Jets will have to cut someone probably Bollinger and a few others will be available, no one that can help long term but someone with NFL experience. As Jeff said this might just be a coinfidence booster for VY maybe Macuk has gotten better and could come in for a few series. If Volek goes down we should only play VY if he is ready AND if the OL can protect him.

The Texas Tech kid might be showing well.

I think that player would need to be a vet and in camp asap. But who wants to come out of retirement for a shot at a #3 spot?

if Volek goes down Young might as well play even if he isn't quite ready.
I don't believe it's wise to throw Young to the wolves. We've seen talent after talent come into the league and never recover from a rookie season where their confidence was shaken because they were expected to produce before they were ready.

I would put Young in situations he can succeed but I can't imagine handing the reins over to him in week three if Volek goes down.

If Mauck can't be relied upon to get the job done, then the Titans need someone with experience in camp quickly.

Nice article in the Houston Chronicle today about VY. Interesting comments about the Titans QB situation by Jack Kemp and his opinion of VY.

If Vince is #2 already, & is Billyboy's official back-up ... then Vince will be starting by game 4.

Because as we all know, Billy is made of tissue paper.

I hope BV takes a little better care of himself now that he is the number 1

I hope. Would love to see BV dropping bombs on the dolts especially.

Did anyone really ever think Matt was truely an NFL caliber QB...If anybody does sounds like Matt could use a confidence builder right now.

I don't know who we could bring in that would be good and affordable. The one thing I wouldn't want to see is us spending too much money on some Kerry Collins type when we still have a few other holes to fill.
