SUMMARY: According to his agent Bus Cook, Steve McNair expects to be paid his scheduled $9 million dollars for next season. Titans GM Floyd Reese said the Titans hope to negotiate something more salary cap friendly, but are willing to handle that salary and the approximately $14.5 million cap charge that will come with the final year of McNair's contract. McNair was slated to receive $9 million in base salary this year along with a $1 million bonus which buys out a $50 million option. "He's going to make $10 million this year either way unless they cut him," said Cook. "Then it would be up to someone else to decide. ... If they're going to keep him, I think we've got to get a new deal done."

on cutting:

How could they?
Would they?
What would happen if they did?

I'm guessing McNair wants his retirement pay in 2006. If the Titans give him 10 mil, they are crazier than I ever expected them to be. 10 Mil for 1 year, I liked to had a stroke! I'm not to cap-smart, but you give a player what he's worth, not what he SHOULD BE worth. Do they think McNair was worth 10 mil last year?

If Vince Young is drafted, I think McNair is worth the money. The reason being we are not good anyway, so what is the difference. The 10-15 million now makes little difference to the team outlook. Cutting him puts Volek at the helm. And while he has had moments, his w-l record does not indicate he can put this team on his shoulder. 10-15 million in additional players would probably not be enough to get us over any hump with Volek at the helm. And even if we did get better, now is the best time to be really bad so we can add some talent before Young starts to take over. We are going to be bad whether we pay McNair or not. So it makes no real difference in my opinion. give him the money.

It would seem to me the advantages are limited if we pay him, but by cutting him we don't really gain much either. So I'd rather.

1. Have a mentor for Young
2. Show some loyalty
3. Get my cap relief in 2 years when Young takes over.

Show McNair the money.

Pure posturing by the agent on the part of his cient in contracct negotiations.

If Bus Cook doesn't budge, we will begin the short "Billy Volek" era in Titans football history.

I can´t imagine Titans with another QB, I think he is worth that aomunt, he is the heart & soul of the Titans, one of our leaders, I was in pain when I saw Mason in another uniform, I don´t want to see our best player in that spot, We need a leader like him, to mentor our new QB and Volek will not win a Super Bowl for us.

Show Steve the money!!

Steve is a great player and leader, but one thing a leader would do is recognize that we have a chance to pick up some big name free agents if he helps us out by "only" taking 4 or 5 mil. If this is Steve's stance and not just that of his agent, then it seems he has forced our hand. Time to give him a final offer.

I say no way we pay him 10 mill. He won't get anywhere near that from another team. 6 mill would be more than fair. If we cut him the cap savings could be put to good use and help build a solid team for what ever quarterback we might draft. I have no problems cutting McNair. I pull for the Titans, not any particular player.

I say give him $10 mil signing bonus on a 3 year contract with salary of $2.5 mil year 1 $3.5 mil year 2 and $5 mil year 3. That way he gets his 10 and we get cap relief if he retires or we get to keep him if he performs better as the team gets better around him.

I say if we were to somehow decide to give him a $10 million signing bonus his salaries should be the whatever the minimum for his tenure for the following years. He wants his $10M, fine, just don't expect much else.

Yuk!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NO WAY. There are too many 'X' greats out there that prove this wrong, some retired some still playing. Green Bay has one 'PLUS' going their way, Farve. THEY SUCK. They are sticking with an older QB who has nothing to prove or show in the last couple years but a fat wallet at the expense of Cheeseheads.
McNair walked in to our Colliseum "In the best shape of his career" in 2005 and won 4 games against the worst teams the NFL had to offer. What if he shows up in 2006 NOT "In the best shape of his life"? What if he shows up in the same condition as last year, where did it get us? Spend 10 mil on a 1968 Pontiac and you could buy a 2006 Lienart GT for half that.

Alot of people putting the cart before the horse. "Keep McNair to mentor Young". We won't draft anyone until April, and odds look like we will trade down and away from the top 3. Any way, 10 Mil is alot for a QB coach!

He needs to commit to at least two more years before I give him $10M this year. In a perfect word he gets the $10M and a one year extension for $5M plus incentives......and we cross our fingers that he lasts.

I have no problem with him getting a big base salary. They just can't give him a big signing bonus. At this point, they have to assume that he could retire at any time. Plus, we could be drafting a QB early who could replace McNair is as little as 1 season. As for the short term, Volek clearly isn't a good starter and could never mentor any QB we draft.

Good QBs are expensive. And McNair is still good, despite the fact that he doesn't have a ton of talent around him. For the sake of comparison, Drew Brees made over $8M, Aaron Brooks and David Carr each had a $5.5M base salary last year, and Joey Harrington got $5M (plus a $3M bonus).

You can guarantee than McNair would get a good contract from a good team if we were to let him go (which we obviously won't).

I agree. There are too many teams looking for a decent QB this year. Even if McNair only takes one year more, he's still an incredible support for a young newly drafted QB. His experience and mentality is not something you can read in the stats. But it has a big impact on a young rookie.

So, send Volek to whereever Heimerdinger is going (or the Lions :brow:) and keep McNair

Volek was a great starter in 2004, if he would've started the 1st game last season('04), he would have put up staggering numbers. He had one real shot in 2005, not enough to scrap his whole career. Heck, Billy, with very little talent around him, put up some great numbers, a feat which Air couldn't do once this year, I only recall one game this whole season that he had some decent passing yards (seahawks). Steve did not make good decisions this year, and looked like he had no chemistry with anyone but Erron Kinney. After 2004, we at least had some bright spots going into the offseason, this year we've got diddley squat. We've got a punt returner who ran one TD back, a good DE, and a good pick in the draft. That's about it.

You are comparing two different years that have almost nothing in common. BV put up numbers against crappy defenses. Steve had even less talent around him. DMase is gone. The WR's this year spent a lot of time hurt and recouperating during the week. Hardly any of them had PT together, much less time to learn and execute a new offense. 2004 to 2005 is apples to oranges.

Matter of fact, I just found this 2005 Tennessee Titans Season Review (pdf) at Titansonline.com:

While the 2005 Titans were the league’s youngest team, they remained relatively healthy compared with the previous squad. The group hardest hit by injuries was the wide receiving corps. Of the 18 total starts missed by the team in 2005 -- down 118 from 2004 -- seven combined starts were missed by receivers Drew Bennett (hand) and Tyrone Calico (calf/hamstring). Reserves Brandon Jones (knee) and Roydell Williams (wrist) also missed a combined 10 games due to injuries.
