Saw Dinner for Schmucks - nothing to add that hasn't already been said here.

Rewatched Stander - South African cop gone Dillinger tale with Thomas Jane as Andre Stander, based on the actual events.. Decent action-ish flick for folks who don't need flying tanks or wire-fu..

The Last House on the Left (2009) - 7/10

Besides the horrid rape scene which goes above and beyond anything that should ever be in a movie, I liked it.

Why are rape scenes even in movies? Makes absolutely no sense. It does not add to the movie; it takes away.

The scene in Deliverance was nothing compared to LHotL.

I disagree. Rape happens in real life. If it's central to the story, which it kind of was in Last House on the Left, it should be in the movie. It was definitely a graphic scene, but if the director feels it needs to be in the movie then he should put it in. It's his/her medium.

Keep in mind LHOTL is a remake and the early 70's original was infamously intended as a statement film - entirely about rape, murder and revenge. It's a mean, unapologetic movie. Both the remake and original intend to get you so fired up about a horrific crime that you would have to question how far you'd go for revenge. Similar scenarios play out in other horror flicks, I Spit on Your Grave, Deliverance, Mother's Day etc. but it's not uncommon in highly acclaimed "regular folk" flicks too - such as Straw Dogs, The Accused etc.
Hell, women will THROW DOWN THE GAUNTLET over some Thelma and Louise and it's ultimately the same scenario.. They loves them that movie..

Okay... but there are different levels of rape scenes... they could've not gone so far with it in this one. I've never seen anything like this in a movie before.

This.

I was kinda disappointed with the remake. That microwave scene....

Coupla things I watched over the weekend..

After Life: strange, slow semi-mystery that never delivers (unless your only interest is only to see Christina Ricci nekkid for a solid hour). Liam Neeson plays an undertaker who talks to the recently dead (or are they??).

Open House: Tense serial killer type flick. Pretty slow as well but more interesting with multiple bonuses including getting to see the actors that play Sookie Stackhouse and Vampire Bill both murdered by the tall blonde Cylon from BSG within minutes of the opening of the film!
Best bonus was the cool recurring music from A Place to Bury Strangers..

The Other Guys -

Although fairly high consensus score on Rotten Tomatoes, I've heard a lot of complaining from audiences, saying it just wasn't funny, that Dinner for Schmucks is funnier, Will Ferrell is just doing his tired old thing. I guess I saw a different film, because I really enjoyed this.

Keep in mind that the only Adam McCay film I've ever liked was Step Brothers (which is perhaps the least liked of all his films), and thought Anchorman and Talladega Nights were vastly overrated. This is probably his most "fun" film, as it really is a refreshing take on the Buddy-Cop genre. Will Ferrel is probably the best I've seen him since Old School - to me, just looking at his face in his "forensic accountant" character was hilarious. But there are other things going for the film. Marky Mark is surprisingly competent in this, with some fantastic moments. It's a treat to see Keaton do his thing again (God, this man needs more film appearances!), and though Samuel L. Jackson and The Rock are criminally underused, they are funny.

Mostly though, the movie works because the jokes are pretty consistent. Sure, there are definitely some duds, but the film throws a lot of solid laughs in. There are 3 scenes that had me close to tears.

Crazy Heart 8.5/10

It's exactly like The Wrestler, except with country music. I'm not big into country, probably my least favorite type of music, but I really enjoyed this movie. Surprisingly good soundtrack.

I haven't been to a movie in a while now. I do want to see The Other Guys. That's all that really appeals to me at the moment.

Yeah that scene was BS.. I do think Garrett Dillahunt and Aaron Paul make great villains though..

I couldn't believe he was the same guy from No Country for Old Men (Wendel - TLJ's partner).

Made a triumphant return to the movie theater this week after my last trip, seeing "Splice", went awfully.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World- Pretty cool movie actually. I begrudgingly went with some friends, but really enjoyed it. I'm really tired of Michael Cera's awkward kid schtick, and it's once again in full force in this movie (seriously, dude has been the same character since Arrested Development), but the video game feel to the movie is really cool. Scott Pilgrim's gay roommate Wallace (played by Macaulay's brother Kieran Culkin) is the absolute star of the movie. Anyways, I'd recommend it to anyone.

The Other Guys- A lot better than I thought it would be. I've been really down on Will Ferrell lately after being a huge fan of his, especially after Land of the Lost, which I thought was mind numbingly dumb, but The Other Guys is sort of a return to form I guess. Mark Wahlberg hold his own in a comedy, which was surprising, and the supporting cast is really good. The Rock and Samuel L. don't get much screen time at all, but they're funny in their parts. Great cameo by Derek Jeter as well.

He's a great actor.. Dunno if you have any interest in Deadwood, but he did such an awesome job as Jack Mc'Call in season 1 (guy who famously killed Wild Bill Hickok) that they brought him back to play George Hearst's geologist in season 2. Two polar opposite characters.. Most casual viewers of the show didn't know it was the same actor.

Saw Piranha.. hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!
One of the silliest, most OTT movies ever shown @ our local theater.
Girls Gone Wild meets pure unadulterated gore..
Great fun. Don't expect anything but boobs and blood.

The Expendables - 7/10

Go see this movie expecting cheesy lines, poor special effects/graphics, extremely unrealistic scenes throughout, etc. and you'll enjoy it.

Terry Crews with the automatic shotgun was awesome.
Jet Li was funny.
Jason Statham is his usual badass self. He's probably the coolest person on the planet.
The Arnold/Willis scene was sort of funny too.

Also... a note to Jesse... don't you think it's funny how you illegally download movies for free and watch them on a laptop while I see them, legally, for free in the theater?
