So we went to see Captain America last night, and I gotta say it was right enjoyable. Hugo Weaving never ceases to be creepy, and was well-cast as Red Skull. The treatment of CA as a comic hero and his overly theatrical original outfit were entertaining and helped to soften the edge between the Marvel Universe and real world war history. Overall good summer entertainment.

Red Skull looked amazing imo.

Easy A

Fear not, men, Easy A is not a chick flick, it's a teen comedy all can enjoy where the lead role was just a chick.

This will obviously be Emma Stone's breakthrough movie and I expect to see good things for her career. She did a great job at playing a witty, sarcastic, wisecracking, wordsmith, her lines and demeanor felt natural and not forced. Think of a snarky Juno. Besides her banters, there are moments in the movie where she had to show versatility and emotion in her acting and I think she is a good young actress. Initially I thought she was too sensual looking for the role but as the movie progresses and she shows off her personality more, they made the right choice in casting her. And her co-stars, Thomas Haden Church and Amanda Bynes who plays the cool, hip teacher and Jesus freak, gave plenty of laughs too. Speaking of Amanda Bynes, I know she always had a baby face, but what happened to her face in this movie? That ain't baby fat, her face puffed up like a blowfish (her figure seemed pretty toned too).

What I liked about this movie was... *gasp* there was actually writing in this and the movie didn't rely on toilet humor.

I've noticed a lot of people say it felt like a classic John Hughes movie, but I didn't really get that vibe except for this being one of those teen comedies where you get some kind of value from it. John Hughes, in case you didn't know, did a lot of the 80's classics, like 16 Candles, Ferris Bueller, The Breakfast Club to name a few. Now I've never seen 16 Candles so maybe Easy A is 16 Candles for our generation? I don't know, though it didn't feel like a John Hughes movie to me, it did pay tribute to the man by making several references to his classics and even a direct reference to the man himself.

If you need 90 minutes to kill, Easy A is fun, funny and smart. One of the better comedies since Superbad.

7.5/10

The Island

*sigh* This should have been Spielberg's movie, not Michael Bay's. First hour was great, was really into it, probably the best first hour of any Michael Bay movie by far, then it started to go downhill from there after everything became "Bay-ized".

A very unenthusiastic 7/10.

From Tim Sullivan (a trusted source)
"STOP what you're doing and see RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES- Hands down the best movie of the summer so far. Intelligent, emotional, provocative, gripping- and guess what, kiddies? It's NOT in 3D. It's NOT in IMAX. It's NOT a mind numbing, cut a minute to detract that the script/acting sucks. It relies on STORY and CHARACTERIZATION! Wow- what a concept! GO APE THIS WEEKEND! Trust me!"

Spot on.

9/10

The best sci-fi movie since District 9. A similar kind of premise, in that the heart and soul of the movie is reliant on being able to feel and empathize with something that does not resemble man, but has the ability to show human emotions(they pull it off masterfully).

The best indication of a good movie is if it's over two hours long and it doesn't feel like it. This one is exactly two hours long and I didn't check the time once.

Best movie of the summer and I would totally see Rise of the Planet of the Apes again in the theater, and that's extremely rare for me.

I strongly disagree. 2.5 out of 10

Each to his own but IMO it's a badly written script, weak and full of cliched characterisation.

I was bored and felt that the movie insulted my intelligence because it was so bad. Not the best £18 I've spent at the cinema.

The sadistic technician, the greedy corporate CEO are lazy plot devices.
The scene on the bridge was ridiculously unrealistic.

......and are we really expected to believe that they would be left alone where they ended up at the end of the movie?

It was bad.

The final destination (4) 3/10

Awful, hope the 5th is better.

Can you not anticipate how bad those movies will be just by watching the trailers?

The previews for the 5th film include some of the worst acting I have ever seen. Simply pathetic. I could have walked onto that set and stole the lead guy's role on my first take. That's how bad that loser sucks.

Not to mention, they added the bald guy from Anchorman (whammy) in the movie. How stupid.

To top it all off, the 4th film was titled "THE Final Destination". Can you really be stupid enough to make a 5th one after using that title? To make matters worse, the original title of the 5th film was intended to be 5nal Destination.

What a bunch of chodes. Sadly, many will continue to support these movies just like everyone did with the Saw franchise.

Considering they show every detail of the movie in the trailer these days there is nothing left to guess over.
Trailers for movies the way they did Jaws and Close Encounters got you interested in the "possibilities" of the movie. Nowadays the only guessing is whether the "cool scene" from trailer ended up on the cutting room floor or not..

There are only five reviews right now. You might want to wait for a bigger sample size....

There have been early reviews left out of RT that have said that the film is actually not bad, and more akin to the Robert E. Howard short stories. As nostalgic I am for the Arnold original, it was laughably different from Howard's stories (Milius just really, really missed the mark there). Momoa has enough charisma and likeability to make this Conan closer to the original character - tough, brutal, but also with a pretty good humor streak.

My real concern is Nispel, who made the horrendous Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake, and the rather droll Friday The 13th (fairly mediocre series in its own right). I tend to be pretty nervous about music video directors getting feature pictures, and he's no different.
