Mathis bags sack

Defensive end Robert Mathis moved into the NFL lead in sacks while sitting
in Union Federal Football Center on Thursday.

The league awarded him a sack for a second-quarter tackle during the Colts' 35-3 victory over Tennessee on Sunday. That gave Mathis, a situational rusher, 111/2 sacks, one-half more than Oakland's Derrick Burgess and the New York Giants' Osi Umenyiora.

The play in question was a third-and-3 at the Indianapolis 20. Cornerback Pacman Jones lined up in the Titans' offensive backfield, took a pitch from quarterback Steve McNair and rolled right, looking for a receiver. Jones raised his arm as if to pass, then ducked as Mathis tackled him for a 13-yard loss.

The play originally was ruled a run, but the Colts appealed to Elias Sports Bureau, the league's official statistics service

Any bets this banter went on at rule meetings?

Typical Dolts always crying to the league

"Oh The patriots jammed our WR's"

"They held after 5yds seee look at the tape Paul, Gene look!!!"

"Ty law Jammed Harrison out of bounds thats unfair to such a classy player like Harrison he didn't deserve it, Tell him Peyton, Marvin open your mouth tell him you didn't like it"

"Please Mr. Tagliabue, Mr. Washington change the rules so I can break a TD record then a year later let my team go undefeated then choke in the playoffs"

"Please Elias Sports Bureau just give Mathis a Sack you know we don't have a leader in any category. We can't let a guy named KVB catch one of our players"

Damn Shame:sad2:

Mathis shouldn't be even given a tackle for that play. Tackles and sacks should be erased because of the enormous stupidity of the call granting an unfair advantage to the defense.

So you are saying that it was a running play?

At the end of the game the Titans RUSHING stats reflected a rush for -13 or so on the play it was only the neighing and bleating of the Castrated One who had the play changed by the ever accomodating NFL. So yes my hooven troll it was a running play until the confused Omegas for some reason decided that it would be better for them (are the dolts now 12.5-0 or something?) to have it changed to a sack on Adam Jones.

Pacman Makes Nfl History

Pacman becomes the NFL's first victim of a "Cornerback Sack."
I have a feeling this is just the first of many unique accomplishments Pacman will have in his career.

Any person who's taken even the most basic of Statistics course in HS or college, know that statistics never tell the whole story, and are almost always used to tell one side of the story. Typically, you have to really dig deep into statistics (i.e. more then mean and medians, numbers pseudo-sport statitians like to use a lot). Whoever said "Stats don't lie" couldn't be more wrong; in fact, it's the exact opposite.

I don't think Mathis is garbage or anything. I mean, 10.5 sacks is 10.5 sacks. But his numbers are clearly a deviant from his usuall production, and don't reflect his real talent.

While I agree with your first (unquoted) paragraph about stats, you are incorrect about Mathis. This is only his third year. He had four sacks his rookie year, and although he played Special Teams all 16 games, he only played about six games on D as a situational pass rusher. Last year he had 11 sacks, and this year, officially or according to ESPN anyway, he has 12.

And, surprise, yeah, I think it was unnecessary for the Colts to petition the league to get the call changed, and I don't like that they did it. I truthfully thought it was a sack at the time, as Adam was clearly setting up to pass, but to have it changed days after the game invites criticism. I wonder how much Mathis lobbied the team so his stats would look better versus how much the team just took it upon itself. We'll never know, but again, I don't like the move.

Like I said, I think Mathis is probably a very decent DE. However, there's one piece of the puzzle your missing; look who's on the other end. It would be foolish to think that Mathis would have even half his 12 sacks at this point of the season, if Dwight Freeney wasn't on the other side. While I haven't watched many Colts games, I feel confident in the fact that most of those sacks are a result of being only single covered by the opposing O-Line, because Freeney, and now Corey Simon, two of the top 10 (maybe best for Freeney) players at their respective positions.

But hey, no question the guy is effective. Like I said, 12 sacks is 12 sacks man. :ha:

Agree 100% about his numbers being higher because of Freeney. He MIGHT have 8 or 9 without him there, but perhaps not. And yeah, it sure helps to have a monster like the Fright on the other side of the line.

Don: Coming from you the title of the thread surprises me. I thought you were more credible than that.

****************************

You guys are unbelievable.

The league reviews plays and changes stuff every week. It's not that big of a deal. Pacman was CLEARLY going back to pass the ball. Are you trying to say he wasn't? The only reason you're b!tching about it is because it happened against your team. If it was KVB and Reggie Wayne you guys would be all over it wanting the sack. Hypocrites.

BTW: Bob Lamey said when the play was originally ruled a tackle (not a sack) that the league would probably change that when they reviewed it on Wednesday. He said it during the game and again in the wrap-up. I don't think the team would've needed to ask them to change it....it was clearly a sack.

BTW (Part II): I re-watched parts of the game last night to see if GoT had made any valid points regarding the low hit on your receiver (sorry, don't recall who, but the play was early in the 3rd quarter), and the "rolling on the ground 3 times and then hitting McNair" play. Let's just say I wasn't surprised to find he was full of crap.

While I'll admit the camera angle made it LOOK like we held up your receiver and hit him low, we in fact did not. Yes, there were three Colts attempting to tackle and another player came in and hit him, he hit him waist high. The receiver went down, popped right back up and did not complain about the hit.

And to say Corey Simon rolled over several times and then hit Steve McNair is the biggest stretch I've ever heard. First of all he did not roll over at all....he was on the ground, reached and barely touched McNair. Steve fell to the ground clutching his leg. If that's all it takes to injure him he needs to hang up the cleats.

Again...I watched both of these plays several times last night trying to see what GoT saw. The evidence simply isn't there.

you admit to limited reasoning capacity and bad eyesight - so do you drive the short bus or are you just a passenger?

Notice you did not address the obvious bias towards party ponies from the refs, why would ya you already admitted you enjoy the current status.

I think its crap...how many TD's/Plays have we lost to bad calls by the refs...when the game is over its over, changing stats after the fact shouldn't happen in my opinion...the colts blew us out. Take the win and move on, its not necessary to make your players look better when your undefeated...show some class Indy!!!

You have to be the most immature poster I've ever encountered on a message board.

2toneblue77: As I said in my earlier post stats are changed (for every team) EVERY WEEK after being reviewed by the Elias Sports Bureau. That's been happening for YEARS.
