Just watched a little of older Colts games and noticed Throton lining up as a NB. Now if the MLB spot gets better, maybe we could run 3 lb's some more in the nickle? Seems like we don't do it much, but our LB's never had much speed. Or maybe Hope is good enough in coverage to play the NB and still keep 3 lb's on the field.
On the other hand, we have two guys that may be pretty good NB's - Wooly and Fuller.
One of Jeff's questions for Larry Stone about scheme changes got me wondering about this.

I would like to see more freak int's from our LB corp due to more pressure up front. I'd like to see effective, disruptive pass rushing that causes deflections, fumbles, stuff like that... There is nothing crazier than watching a mad hatter freak run out of a LB for a TD... This is what Bulluck likes to do.
Wasn't our D-Line around the top of the league for sacks last year?? Or am I just wishing that statement to be true?
oh yeah. KVB had crazy totals. However...that constant disruption, the pocket collapsing quickly... good things happen when quarterbacks are hurried. That's all I'm saying. Thornton seems quick... I hope he's the type that swoops in and makes something great out of what is otherwise good.theprizdfighter said:Wasn't our D-Line around the top of the league for sacks last year?? Yep. I'd imagine Thorton has better blitzing skills than Sirmon. And if we had a guy to play inside who could do that too....imagine the everchanging blitzes in the face of the opposing QB's.
How bout AJ Hawk? :brow: Ok, maybe more realistically Bobby Carpenter in the 2nd? :brow:

d'qwell jackson is our guy.
I agree D'Qwell Jackson is the way to go in the 2nd round. Trade Sirmon.
Sirmon says he is willing to earn his spot..... so keep him draft Jackson (i really like this kid) and make them play for the spot. Then we'll have Jackson on the field and Sirmon as a quality backup until next year
I like Sirmon's mentality concerning all this. I'd hesitate to discard a player who thinks "team first"...Da Architek said:Sirmon says he is willing to earn his spot.....
Why waste a 2nd round pick on a guy who might not even beat our Sirmon for a starting job? Besides, only 2 LBs play in the nickel so the MLB is not going to be playing 1/2 the time. Another problem with Jackson is he isn't a big physical LB. IMO we need a more physical LB who specializes in stopping the run.
Having athletic LBs does allow us to use the nickel a little less and stay in our base more often. That allows us to be stronger against the run in those situations.

Your right he isn't big, but your wrong about him not being physical. I am fully confident he would be able to stop the run.

Jackson tops the list of the MLBs. He's very versatile. I've been thinking about Kai Parham for awhile, too, because of the group, he's the one with the actual ideal size to play the position...but...I heard he ran like a 5.0 forty. Anyone remember that?

Kai Parham seems more the size I think we need but his 40 time is a little in the Brad Kassel range.
Jackson could be a good fit but his 230 pound size is on the small size for a MLB. He might end up being a better SOLB in the pros however there are effective MLBs his size that have been successfull.

I know, but I'd bet both could (and be big upgrades over what we have).

The two guys from last year come to mind - Tatupu and Odell Thurman.
Kai Parham did clock a 5.0 at the combine, but he does have better game speed than that, and he also has very good short range quickness on the field. In my opinion he's best suited as a 3-4 ILB, where his footspeed would be masked more.
I agree with you though that we need more of a run stopping guy, since the MLB will likely not be in on nickel packages. D'Qwell is more of a coverage guy that works better in space. Abdul Hodge is the guy I like. A bit bigger than D'Qwell is @ 237, but he's alot more physical. He works better in traffic, and as a downhill, run stopper rather than in coverage like D'Qwell does. I just think he would fit better.
Is David Thornton as fast as Bulluck? I know bulluck is about as fast as LB's get but I know that David is very quick as well.
No. I don't think so. They only time I've heard on Thornton so far is 4.62 or so.
I really like Gerris Wilkinson, ILB from GA Tech. I think he could come in and make an impact as a later round pick.
if you all remember right, godfrey was cut after he was pushed aside as a 3 down player by sirmon i.e the samething that is happening to sirmon now that thornton has been signed, honestly i see sirmon being cut, but if he reduces his pay, then that might be a different story...
round 2 i want abdul hodge from iowa...the kid is a stud...
