SUMMARY: Bus Cook, agent representing Steve McNair, and Titans GM Floyd Reese are in the early stages of talks, according to the agent, in hammering out a workable situation for the 11-year veteran quarterback. "We're still talking. We haven't gotten far yet. Steve wants to be there, and I believe they want him there, but if we can't work it out, then we may have to go someplace else," Cook said. When asked whether or not salary proposals have been traded with Reese, Cook replied, "I haven't really traded any numbers with Floyd. And I don't know if I want to trade numbers with Floyd, because every time I do, my numbers always end up looking better than his."

What an odd statement... how does he expect to do any negotiation if no offers are ever made...

Come on guys, this isn't a new thing, just get it done. Quit playing games Cook, Mcnair shouldn't be looking for a big upgrade here...

Reckon there are a few teams out there that would be interested in McNair. It's just weird that the other teams are only asking about Volek. Do they know something we don't? Given their choice, they want Volek over McNair?

I would imagine Floyd wouldnt mind waiting until as close to March 1 as possible, so he has a better idea how the draft is going to shake out... if we land Leinhert or Young, thats going to significantly impact Mac's future.

And Cook's comment about numbers is just stupid... duh, that what they call negotiating.

I'm just ready to get this deal finished. I just can't imagine a possibility that Mac9 isn't our QB next yr. If he wanted to retire that would be one thing, but it appears that he wants to play here. So why wouldn't this get worked out.
Steve has had the same agent for years and they never have tried to break the bank, so why would we think they would want too much money now?

I think teams are looking at Billy because they believe in the end there's little to no chance McNair shakes loose from Tennessee. Also teams will want Billy for the future. The teams likely looking at an 11-year veteran typically don't go for that type of QB until later in the offseason, after they're freed.

I don't think he does. I think he wants it crossed off the list like he says. Besides, it's not like they're going to sign McNair to a 7-year deal or anything. Three is about right, maybe four. Also, even if they do a deal, they can still cut him if they wanted to. We've seen that before. Lastly, if we land Leinart or Young, you certainly don't want to cut McNair and take away the best mentor on the team. I think Mac will be around the same amount of time regardless of whether we draft those guys or not.

Overall, I wonder if we're talking a reduction in salary here. I don't think we're going to escalate Steve's cap number in any way. So naturally, Bus wants less less, Reese wants more less. I don't like the agent-speak, but it's part of it. Hopefully this won't drag out. What do you guys think is a fair salary for McNair, and a fair contract going forward?

Offer the guy 5 mil a year, take it or leave it. We can go 4-12 just as easily without Mac and if we don't break the bank we can sign some FAs.
Assuming we draft a QB anyway we can always keep Volek for one more year. Mac's value is starting to get into the EG range and if he asks too much we can always grab a guy like Kitna if we don't want Volek.

I think Steve is still in a little better shape than EG was but your right in a sense that we shouldn't spend to much money on him.

"We can go 4-12 just as easily without Mac" That is great! Yes we can. If he want to try and bust our balls than screw him. I would go a bit higher that 5 mill though. I was thinking around 14-15 mill over the next two years. I would not got more than 3 years on a contract and would prefer to go two years.

FYI

Steve sold his place in Franklin awhile back, only to get a nicer spread in Nashville. Closer to the stadium, practice field, doctors and all.

Price was around 1.4M, so I don't really see Steve going anywhere.

With all the "lack of identity" talk, I can't see the FO letting Steve go. He's been the face of the franchise, and the divorce from Eddie was rough enough. Winning cures everything, and IMO, #9 still gives us the best chance to win game in/game out.

I really don't think you guys have watched what works in the NFL. We need to get a pure passer, not a runner. As much as I love McNair and have two of his jersey's, I would let him go, do everything it takes to get Matt Leinart, and give Billy Volek a shot. We probably will still struggle next year, so why not give Billy a shot, and prep for Leinart??? I am sure Volek can be a good mentor to Leinart, and if he can't, who cares, we still have Norm Chow to help him.

What we need to to keep McNair, who is the only QB we have who is capable of mentoring a rookie QB (which we are likely to draft). He also gives us our best chance to win games as a starter.

Volek is clearly not starter material.

Your probably right about McNair giving us the best chance to win SOME games, but either way, we probably are still going to have a down season next year, I think I read somewhere that we have the 6th most difficult schedule next year, so why not see what Billy can do as a full time starter? We really have only seen him on an inconsistent basis. Then get ready for Matt Leinart???

Volek can't mentor a young QB. Plus, we've seen him enough to know he has a great deep ball and little else...

The best thing we can do with Volek is trade him for a solid draft pick.

We have the 6th hardest schedule based on this year's records...

Which means jack squat for next season.
