I'm both excited and a little disturbed both after watching his HS play.
Young has not changed at all in his style of play. Those HS kids could have UT unis on and nobody would know the difference. What disturbs me is I simply cannot see Young ever being a basic drop back passer in the NFL. They are going to have to let him take off when he wants to. Thats most of his game. If the Titans try to force Young to play like a normal NFL QB it will impede his game. IMO he will have to have a bunch of pre-designed running plays from the shot gun with 4 WRS split out to open the field and the offense will have to be simplified to just a couple of reads. The nice thing is Young might have the talent to pull it off, hopefully.

The thing is, Vince did change drastically over the last few years. When he was a redshirt freshman, he was run first, run second and pass third. Last year and the year before, he was pass first, pass second and then if it blows up or WRs can't get open, run for 20 yards. Last year, even though they did have a zone read style of offense, if you watched most of the games, he used the zone read to do play action instead of taking off and running on designed plays.

Vince is going to be stout.

I also think that he will pick up things a lot quicker than people give him credit for. He is a very hard worker. He will be committed to starting or being ready to as soon as possible.

You shouldn't be disturbed... Its a highlight video where they showcase his running ability... Because his runs are phenominal, people tend to showcase them more. He threw for 2,545 his senior year, and 26 TD's and was the #1 QB in the Nation.

I've seen plenty of games where VINCE marched the ball, down the field, in less than 10 plays and not running once, in college.

The bottom line, he knows how to move the chains.

Soxcat is disturbed?

......by that video? Too many jay cutler bong hits i suppose. What i saw in the video had me drooling all over the place thanking God that vince is on our team. This might be the most extraordinary athlete to come down the pike in a decade. This guy is a football micheal jordan!

He wasn't a man against boys rather more like a divine being vs mortals. I watched the texas playoff video. These are the best teams from one of the top states for high school football. They couldn't tackle the guy! The guy could be playing in a muddy quagmire and never get his jersey wet because he never gets taken down. In a couple fo those TD runs he pounded the last guy trying to tackle him.

My biggest concern is trying to make Vince something he is not. Trying to make Jay Cutler a pocket passer is a lot easier than making Vince one.
In HS and college you can get away with having only one hot WR and if he is covered you run. Still, Chow needs to find a way to be able to run an offense that can take advantage of Vince running 15 times per game or he will not be geetting all he can get out of him.

Pocket passing...

Out of all those highlights i saw a lot of great throws from the pocket. The army all american game shows several exellent throws.

Jay cutler couldn't carry vince young's bags!

The broncos suck!

even if he isnt a pocket passer he can still get outside and throw the ball on the run, and that will make people come up and try to tackle him, which could leave some of the wr open

Not to worry, the improvement Vince showed in his passing from his freshman year to the second half of his sophmore year was dramatic, and then he really topped that off with an outstanding junior season throwing the ball. In 13 games last year he had 3,036 yards, 26 TD, 10 INT, 65% completion percentage. Texas scored more than 50 points per game last year (more even than the vaunted USC offense). Those are not the numbers of a run first QB.

ESPN and their "one read offense" crap is just ridiculous. Those guys spout off and everyone believes them. I saw every game Vince played in college, and believe me, there were MANY times when he made multiple reads, especially last year.

You guys should be excited, you just got the best player in the draft, bar none. Not to mention picking up thousands of new fans, myself included.

Hawk...

You made a good point about the one read philiosophy. One read offenses don't even exist in high school.

Vince will have to throw with some effectiveness in the pocket. You have to as an nfl QB. You have to have a passing offense that uses the whole field and that means effective passing from the pocket and standing in there strong.

Sockscat may have some point about vince in high school because vince was just so superior athletically he could free lance and run all over the place with great success. That probably did hold him back a bit in college but as you said he was able to improve all along.

We just need to be patient with him and once he is ready the rest of the league is going to get their a$$es handed to them. And of course we have the next earl cambell in the draft as well.:greedy:

Patient? I'm talking about putting an offense in place that he is comfortable with and letting him loose. Maybe not from game one but I believe soon as he sniffs the field it may be hard to get him out of the lineup IF the offense suits him. All the criticism, mine included, is about VY trying to run a traditional offense. I'm all for play action rollouts (with options to run), predesigned runs and a mixture of short, medium and long passes. The crap we ran last year with Mac will inhibit Young's abilities. Let the guy loose.

Texas had one of the Most balanced attacks in College football last year... scoring more points than any other team.

They did it on the ground and through the air. People would take away the run, and VINCE would beat them through the air, they would change their coverage, and Vince would catch DB's with their backs turned and kill them with the RUN. He just does what he needs to do.

I don't care what everyone is saying about it being the NFL. If Vince rolls outside of the pocket, he is gonna put some DB's & LB's in so interesting pickles all day long.

He has a way of Freezing the Defense.

Check out http://www.mackbrown-texasfootball.com/000_stats/05/teamcume.htm

You will be hard pressed to find more of a balanced attack than this.

What if you can't make him into a drop back passer? What if Vince can make sure you generate the offense to win without being a drop back passer? Are style points available for HOW you win?

Busta...

When a quality passer drops back he has the maximum field to work with and the maximum field the defense has to cover. From sideline to sideline and 60 yards down the field. When a QB rolls out he esentially reduces the field by 40%. Do you want to play without 30% of the playbook or 40% of the field? To be a star QB he has to be at least decent with the drop back passing game and that means being patient and not running too soon. He has to make all the reads and all the throws.

Micheal vick is a good player but he will never be as good as a brady or manning. The other issue of course is what will become of young when he gets some age and wear on him and can't run as good. Can he beat you with his arm in the pocket? He will have to.
