Welcome To Titans Talk - Tennessee Titans Fans Message Board

Not sure this was the right move...

Narveson handled nearly all the kicking for the Titans in the preseason and made the most of the opportunity. He converted 6-of-7 field goals and both of his extra points. Narveson's only miss came from 58 yards.
He generated some national buzz two weeks ago when he drilled a 59-yard field goal during Tennessee's second preseason game against Seattle.
Titans face GB, who picked up Narveson, in third game. Hopefully waiving Narveson doesn't come back to bite them.

If it comes down to a udfa kicker beating us, we have bigger problems
Not necessarily. Picture the game being 28-26 Titans with 23 seconds left and GB has the ball at our 34 yard line. The game may not have anything at all to do with an UDFA Kicker. But an UDFA kicker may very well make the final score 29-28 Packers.

Kicking is a bigger part of the game than you may think.

I wouldn't say quick. Not too many teams need a FG kicker. I'm sure we thought he'd go unclaimed and would stash him on the PS. Was really hoping he'd go unclaimed as I'm sure we'll all get tired of Folk and his weak leg by week 6.
Folk had the highest fg % in the league last year (amongst those with more than a few kicks. 29/30 and 5/6 from 50+ which was probably above average for last season from that distance.

Better to not put yourself in a position to have to kick it 50+ anyway.

Agree with not putting yourself in that position, but why not keep a young leg who can hit the long kicks?

Especially when he's cheap!

Cheers and I don’t know anyone really questions Folk’s accuracy. It’s just that of that 5/6, his long was 53. I just don’t think they even let him try from any farther because he just doesn’t have the leg.

This is what it comes down to in the end. I know teams will play for the FG, the Titans just don't want to play for the super long FG. They will need to be more aggressive in that scenario.

Not many kickers are getting chances beyond 53 yards tho. The record for makes from 55+ is 6 in a season (he missed 2 other attempts). So not like every kicker is out there booting it from 53+ in normal situations. Kicks from that far out are usually coming in times of desperation at the end of the half/game etc.

No doubt. I just think having a K with the opportunity for such a kick to be made has a value that Folk doesn’t have.
If titans are 55+ away, they’re going for it or punting every single time with Folk. Might not be bad, but 3 pt opportunities, especially if punting is the alternative, is almost always better.

While I agree it would be nice to have a kicker you're semi confident in at 55+ but those are few and far between. He was above average up to 53 yards. That's not a bad thing.

Rookie kicker makes 1 long fg in a preseason game and everyone's ready to dump the top kicker from last season. Lol

We remember times like Bironas kicking a 60 yarder to win against the ponies. I recall Hentrich kicking for Anderson or Del Greco from 58/9 against Buffalo but missed and lost.
Naverson’s 59 yards was in the 2nd qtr, not to end the half. Those are the more memorable chances.
With Folk, a 60 yarder to win is already out of the question. It’s possible 5 more yards in is already out of the question.
I get we’re also talking about accuracy, but with Naverson, you can actually kick, even a lower percentage accuracy, than the guarantee 0% accuracy from Folk.

It's not about monetary value at this point, it's more about the available roster spots. It's been a super tight squeeze at this point to fill out the 53 man roster, and 2 FG kickers just wasn't going to cut it.

I wonder how Narveson was doing in practice. If he was lighting it up in practice, they should have not try to show him off during the games and just placed him on the PS. Green Bay watched him during the preseason and was impressed with him, as we the fans were too.

I know it's preseason but he was very impressive and I was hoping that he wouldn't get claimed.

Speaking of 2 FG kickers, I do remember back in 2019 when we did have 2 on the 53 man roster. Massive kicker for the longer kicks. Can't remember his name without Google.

2019 Kicker situation was an absolute mess. Cairo Santos (yep, the same killing it for chi now) was brought as 1/4 kickers that year.
Santoso was a “KO specialist”. If I recall correctly, he had 2 KO that resulted in better field position for the opposition than the titans had averaged all year.

Succop got hurt, Joseph came on late, only had 1 FG but was perfect on xp throughout the playoff run.

I’m also disagreeing with the point that only 50+ are taken to end a half/game, or when the kick is key late for a W.
Incoming stats post when I’m done.
