There was plenty of blame to go around that game but Pees called an awful game. 3 man rush on obvious passing situation against Mahomes was idiotic on so many levels. Completely backfired.

You live and die by the blitz and that game I was more than willing to die by it because of the lack of pass rush. Numbers don’t lie.

Mahomes:
Under Pressure: 3/10, 9 yards
No Pressure: 20/25, 285 yards, 3 TD

vs Blitz: 1/5, 7 yards
No Blitz: 22/30, 287 yards, 3 TD

Near 30% pressure rate is actually quite good. I would have to look it up but asking for more than that is crazy. I get that this does not take into account how much time he had when we did not get pressure.

Everything was going extremely well in the championship game....considering we were on the road for 3 consecutive games against the best teams. The game came down to one play in the 3rd quarter....3rd and long Mahomes was about to get sacked, however Landry missed him ending in a ridiculous touchdown. If we look at the whole picture, we did better than expected.

1) I don't think we had the personnel healthy and available to do some of the things we want as fans.

2) Mahomes is statistically more dangerous against the blitz.

I know it is frustrating to watch your team sit back and get picked apart, but I really think that was the best gameplan for the situation. We missed some tackles and busted some coverages and that hurt a lot.

I think his scrambling is what hurt the most. Not a lot of yards but 3-4 key FD runs.

Better coverage, especially downfield. I don't think blitzing one is going to catch Mahomes. Dude can just flat outrun most edge rushers, and like the OP said, he's the best in the league at throwing on the run. I would try containment. Just keep him in the pocket, as best you can, and cover the shit out of his targets.

When the Colts shut down Mahomes and the Chiefs in Week 5 there were two primary factors.

1. A 4 man rush moving inward to collapse the pocket. They rushed at least 4 almost every play and it raddled Mahomes.

In the AFC Championship game, we rushed three or less almost the entire second half.

2. Sticky man coverage. Their guys made every pass contested.

In the AFC Championship game, we went with a lot of zone schemes and Logan and Jayon got beat repeatedly in their assignments. Ryan gave up the most big plays by far against much faster wide receivers.

Just comparing those two games, it was clearly a combination of poor defensive scheming and an inability to match up with their receivers.

Pees is gone. Ryan is gone. After watching those two games back to back, this makes a lot of sense.
