I know a few threads have touched on the downfall of ESPN and the different reasons why.

Short 12:00 minute YouTube documentary explains some things on financially what the issues are.

I don't agree with the beginning part they ESPN (or other networks) fell the "need" to analyze everything and give sports breakdown/opinions except during certain shows.

The biggest show for ESPN during the 90's and forward was Sportscenter. The biggest draw to that was highlights from ALL games of the day. I feel that show needs to get back to basics. Quit with the analyzing everything, add more highlights and certainly show something from every game, match, etc. and leave all the analyzing to the specific shows throughout the day. Nothing worse than 1 hour of show spending 45 minutes on 3 big market teams.

Some of this I was unaware of. I didn't realize ESPN networks cost more than other channels in a cable/satellite subscription.

Twitter played a part as well. When ESPN started filling airtime with fans' twitter reactions I was immediately turned off. Then they started treating athletes' twitter accounts the same way E! and TMZ treated celebrities' accounts I lost even more interest.

I think the majority of it is merely people cutting cable.

That, and people go to the internet now for highlights instead of waiting to see them on a program.

Some builds just become outdated. This is one of them.

The problem is I would still like to watch that SportsCenter and I can't, forcing me to go online to watch highlights. I have no desire to watch ESPN's 15 debate shows.

also those stupid shows where its just 2 people taking the opposite sides of an argument and yelling at each other... not sure why those have become so popular but they suck something awful

It also has a lot to do with the personalities they had on Sportscenter. Sean Salisbury? Him and Stew where the best! Sean didn't give a chit which team you were, he would call your team out, the players out, and critique and criticize them like they should be. He had no darlings.

The only time I usually watch ESPN is during a live sporting event or as background noise as I'm getting ready for work.

IMO, the best thing ESPN has going are the 30-for-30 and E:60-type shows they do.

They're cheap to produce, and for some reason, people watch them.

I agree there are annoying personalities, but bad personalities wouldn't be so much a problem if they stuck to the highlights.

Also, I'm ok with ESPN expanding from only highlights, just not on their anchor show.

Live sporting events makes sense and I like the documentaries as well. That's part of how I've come across a few good YouTube documentaries. The guys that do Chart Party, the worst, and a few others do really good research for simple 5-10 documentaries on things I wouldn't have bother looking up my own.

I hate going to the internet for highlights when it's unnecessary. Plus, with the amount of money and coverage that ESPN has, theye cover more highlights than most websites IF they didn't edit all of them down for the sake of talking heads.

I don’t know anyone who watches ESPN anymore.

The best show they have now is the one in the morning.....

And I was thinking of Nate Burleson on NFL Network, so scratch that.

I wish ESPN would just die already, so the next version can come along and hopefully do it right.

They also started adding little bits and pieces of things that aren't sports to me, like WWE. I'd rather them actually show AFL and MMA highlights. Not the mainstream sports, but still sports.

I'd like to see another alternative sports network that goes back to the roots of what ESPN used to be. I'd say the same thing for other channels like MTV too.

Their bread and butter programming has been affected by the internet.

That's not why they are failing. A billion dollar company can adjust, it's not like there isn't a need for sports programming.

They are failing because they grossly mis read their base. They decided to cater to a young generation of sports fans. The result was covering the NBA too much. Then on top of that, they have pumped out laughably bad original programming. "WokeCenter @ 6" being the most recent disaster.

Cuz it’s all about social justice and race. Always a black persons vs a white person. All the same.
