brokeback mountain moment.

Maybe Bus Cook has the rights for the follow up and wants his 2 former stars to start a new career?
He's doing what he can to end their current careers.

I think what football needs to do, is figure out a way to let the players end their careers gracefully, because it's a shame. Look at all the bad endings lately, Bagwell, Farvre, McNair, Eddie George, Emmitt, Montana, Rice, Olajuwon, Jordan, and it seems like the list goes on and on. And it always ends the same way. With the player slowly wilting away. There has to be a better way for all these legends to go out with their teams in a graceful way.

There is a graceful way for these guys to leave the game. McNair can take a cut in pay allowing the Titans to get a few extra players around him and then play one or two more years and retire. This idea of McNair going to another team has an EG stench about it and it wouldn't surprise me if he stunk up the place in Baltimore and went down as another of those guys who thought his talent and ability was way higher than it really was. Changing venues at this point in his career is not going to be as easy as he thinks. McNair's best chance at success with the career he has left is to stay in TN one more year, declaring it to be his last (or probally his last) and reducing his salary so we can get him some support. McNair goes out as one of the greatest Titans of all time with his picture adorning the stadium right up until the day he is officially retired. EG proved how bad it can get.

Sure soxcat...

Yeah mcnair had it so good last year with the titans. How horrible that he might have a running game and derrick mason to throw to. Yeah that will really expose him. You write as if mcnair was the QB for the rams last year. Any scenario would be better wouldn't it?

The problem is the competitive spirit that made these players great eventually makes them think they can play well past their prime. Emmitt Smith got the career rushing record through dogged pursuit. That same ambition betrayed him when he didnt realize that he had basically given all he could. To use another Cowboys example, Troy Aikman didnt retire til after the Cowboys released him and he couldnt find another job elsewhere.

There are occasionally guys who teams think are done who prove people wrong. Joe Montana took the Chiefs to the playoffs. Jerry Rice had a couple great seasons in Oakland and went to the Super Bowl after the 49ers thought he was done. Of course, Jerry Rice also had half a useless season in Seattle and a training camp in Denver before he realized it was time to hang up the cleats and put on dancing shoes. These guys are definately the exception to the rule.

There is a way that players can go out with dignity and grace. Follow the Jerome Bettis model. Or Mashall Faulk. Faulk probably wont have the storybook ending Bettis did, but the fact that he's going to be able to retire with the team that defined his career is going to mean he will always be remembered fondly by Rams fans. Sadly, everytime we think of Eddie George, our last memory is going to be a contract squabble and him sitting on the bench in Dallas.

Favre says McNair 'doesn't deserve' treatment

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (April 20, 2006) -- Brett Favre, who has been treated with patience by the Green Bay Packers while deciding if he will retire, doesn't like the way the Tennessee Titans have dealt with Steve McNair, their veteran quarterback.

"All of the things he has done for that team," the Packers QB said. "He really has been the face of that team for the last 10 or 11 years, the one bright spot really. To be treated that way I think is really unfair. He doesn't deserve it ... It is not right."

I reckon you need to worry about your own team first rather than spend so much time worrying about ours. The picture in Green Bay isn't exactly.....comfy!

I am the "official hater"... and im not a BV fan, but he is right.
He doesnt say anything thats not true... should he have said it, maybe not - but there it is

I hope Steve plays again for us, but if he doesnt - I will enjoy watching him play for someone else.

The NFL should have cap friendly approach to vets - if they have been with the team "X" amount of years then you earn additional cap room...

The team wants Steve, to sit, not get hurt, and wait for them to see who they can replace him with... NICE! Those who remember the Earl trade will appreciate my negative view of how teams approach these situations.

Hey c'mon...Brett Favre is a great guy!!...
FOR ME TO POOP ON!

Dat "monday morning quarterback" commercial musta got stuck in hees head...tell us, o mitey Brett, what would you have done to you eef you were an aging quarterback who couldn't feegure out when to retire to your ranch in Meesaseepi and queet yankin your fans' chain? Maybe you know somteeng about dat?
Hee should mind hees own beesness...like making sure dat John Madden ees pressing and folding hees underwear correctly.

This "he has been the face of the franchise so he deserves better" is a bunch of crap. Sure he was, but we also paid him very well for his services. We drafted him 3rd overall when others might not have and put him in the perfect situation to succeed. He has been a warrior... skipping practices and not putting in the extra effort. We paid him more than he was worth for a long time. Now we want to pay him what his current value is. Why should we pay him more ?

I don't think that would really matter. Even if the Titans had enough cap room to give McNair the money he wants, I really doubt that they'd give it to him.

Bottom line is that McNair isn't worth what he is asking, and no NFL team or organization in the world is going to throw away millions of dollars in a mediocre investment no matter how wealthy they are.

I would agree with most of that, in my statement I was addressing the Vet/Cap situation as a whole and not just his case.... I never expected that they would pay up in full to Steve or that they should. Why dont you have a look at the Yankees payroll and rethink your statement about how much a Team will throw around - its only a mediocre investment unless it works, You Could be in a situation with enough cap room to have two big time vets backing up your youthfull draft pick and still pay those guys enough money to keep them happy. Not that they should, but they could!

Yes, they could, but they won't. It's very easy for us to be on the other side of the fence, and think about how everything should be handled and what a team should or shouldn't do. But if you were the owner of the Titans and it was your money, would you really pay a guy millions and millions of dollars just to see him happy? or would you pay him based on his performance?

As for the Yankees, I don't understand what you mean. I've never seen the Yankees throwing money around/overpaying for mediocre players. Every year they are willing to do whatever it takes to get/buy a championship, so they try to get the best of the best - either they get a very good established player or a player coming from a great season. Whether some of these players end up being a bust or not, it's another issue, because they were originally investing in a player that looked good. And they never hesitate to drop a player that didn't perform as expected.

I am on the other side of the fence and yes i might overpay a player if i wanted to, thats what owners get to do. The yankees who havnt won a championship since they went over 100 million in payroll... and didnt get out of the first round last year with those "best of the best" players... hmm ok - looked like a mediocre team to me. All this is based on if you believe steve is done or if there is anything left in the tank... i dont know, i hope he has something left
