The skit is a spoof of VH1's "Behind The Music":
Narrarator: "After facing utter defeat, Blue Oyster Cult returned to the studio for a recording session with famed producer Bruce Dickenson...."
The singer is annoyed by the cowbell being played near his mic when tracking "Don't fear The Reaper". This results in a series of skirmishes within the band, and Dickenson (Christopher Walken) is asked to help settle the issue. Instead, Dickenson insists that he needs to hear more cowbell. "I've got a fever! And the only prescription is MORE COWBELL!"
The dancing cowbell player is following Dickenson's orders: "Work the space! Really! WORK the SPACE!"
It's something that I never really noticed at all, but now whenever I hear that song, all I hear is that f'ing COWBELL!
