I heard on 104 this morning that when they ran the mile about 3/4 of the way though some of the soldiers took off sprinting to the finish while talking some smack to the players. Pacman then takes off and out runs them to the finish.

How does a weapons simulator work?

Short version:

Actual military-issue weapons are modified to work on an air system to activate the bolt mechanism and make it work as though it's firing. There are electronics installed in the weapon (sensors and a laser) to detect where the weapon is aimed, and a manifold to connect the existing gas sytem to an air compressor.

It's networked through two computers, one which handles the simulation (enemy soldiers, tanks, etc) projected on a widescreen about twenty feet from the firing line. The second computer handles a projected infrared grid (which is invisible to the firers, but not a camera with an infrared filter) and calculates where the laser from each weapon is when a trigger is pulled while the simulation is running. The combined data from the two computers determine if hits are registered or not. Also, there's a pretty loud sound system included for fun.

For a more detailed explanation, shoot me a PM ;)
