Look at points per game when Henry and Brown were both playing. We didn’t have any trouble scoring or moving the ball. I am not saying I like Downing, but injuries have played a huge roll in the effectiveness of the offense. As such hard to evaluate Downing in that performance.
Majority of those points were off turnovers by the defense creating short fields. A good offense doesn’t have to rely on turnovers to score. Even both touchdowns last night were off a turnover and a 4th down stop. If you have to rely on turnovers for your offense to put points on the board, you are eventually going to come up short. All season, with or without Henry, this team has struggled to drive the ball down the field and score TD’s. They have struggled to even get first downs most of the season. Downing’s system is vanilla and his play calling is idiotic most of the time. He has no feel for the flow of the game and that’s a very important trait for a coordinator to have. He is the biggest weakness on this team.

The reality is that Downing and company will probably all be given a mulligan due to Henry's absence. Before Henry's injury we had 4 games of 30+ points and a 27-3 thumping of the Chiefs. We failed to score 24 or more points just once without Henry in 8 games.

You can make a case that Downing did well the first half of the year and deserves another year, and that few offensive coordinators would have done anything with some of the rosters we have been putting out there.

Majority? For me to believe that I will need some evidence. This team was rolling offensively with Henry health and Brown healthy. No one was complaining then. If that is your story, for me to believe it I need you to cite those drives in which we scored on a short field because of a turnover…and that those were the majority of our drives. You made claim, so demonstrate it is true. I will wait patiently.

Remember how bad Shane Bowen and the defense was last year? We were all calling for his head, me included. A lot of you guys were ready to trash Byard last year too now he’s back to the Pro Bowl.

I know it’s easy to say “get rid of Downing, move on from Tanny, Lewan is bum now”, etc. but this offense has been really banged up. This last game shows a flash of what it could and should look like when all of our weapons are back. And this last game was with a makeshift line.

And I’m no Downing apologist, he been pretty bad and a big part of the problem too. Just saying, maybe he’ll follow the path of Bowen and end up getting the hang of things. Art Smith had his learning curve as well.

I keep seeing posts saying vanilla, no imagination, etc. The first dominant game I saw was the Redskins running 44. Game was on the line, everyone knew what was going to happen, it did, and 44 ran for 4 yards a carry all the way down the field. Broke the opposition. There is no vanilla in the NFL. It’s all very complicated. Players need to win the match.

I absolutely agree with this if Jim Schwartz has a brother who is an offensive genius.

Interesting conversation but the main thing holding the offense back has been injuries across the board. The OL maybe the biggest. Last game we saw three plays close together where three separate OL guys got raped. Quiz, Radunz and Brewer. The most solid guy all year has been Jones (a guy some wanted replaced a few years ago).

After we lost Henry we had a patchwork of RBs where Downing was struggling to find some consistency. We have had different WRs in and out of the lineup all year and soon as we seem to have something that works a guy gets injured. Tannehill has struggled at times and it is amplified by the OL struggles.

Either way take any OC in the league and force him to make do with the personnel inconsistencies we have had and it isn't easy. Instead of giving Downing credit for making the changes we needed to make to pull out the win the tendency is to bash him for the bad. Both coordinators have done a pretty good job getting the team to 10 wins all things considered.

Defense I agree but offense the play calling has not been the same. We miss Arthur there. The fact we do not run more RPO and boot legs is on OC. Horrible first down play calling.

Glad we got 10 wins lets win out and get Henry back and I think we make some noise in AFC. Henry comes back we going to the bowl!

Dude every time we run the boot Tannehill gets sacked or has to throw it away immediately. Teams have figured that play out. Back side defender goes right for RT17 every time.

I’m old enough to remember when people were asking for Arthur Smith’s head in year one after we lost Matt LaFleur to Green Bay.
