I saw The White Buffalo at the drive in when I was a pup.
Not sure who the character is you mention from the Heston movie - but I do know this was a bit of a Wild Bill Hickok fever dream - with the usual suspects (Charlie, Jack McCall etc.)..
Always struck a chord with me because of the Nuge song The Great White Buffalo - which was actually a doggone good tune..
Actually, my apologies. I mistook Jack Warden as Brian Keith for some reason.

I could go on about Westerns all day since I'm a huge Eastwood fan. I would love to have that "35 Years of Eastwood" set. I didn't really start watching Westerns till I saw The Magnificent 7 for the first time.

Sergio Leone.. All that needs to be said.
Not only a movie, but a masterpiece. The best thing Bronson ever sniffed..
It is funny you mention that as I do. Most people think the Dirty Dozen or maybe the Death Wish franchise when you mention Bronson, but easily and by a long shot it was Once Upon a Time that was the best movie. I loved Death Hunt too- he was getting chased all over the snowy mountains for being wrongly accused of killing men and stealing their gold teeth. Classic movie, I mean how could you possibly go wrong with Charles Bronson and Lee Marvin!?

Yeah, I am a big Western guy myself. We just don't get the opportunity to see them anymore with all of these super hero explosion alien movies.....

The recent Westerns that I can remember that stood up are Open Range (Kostner and Robert Duval), Unforgiven (Eastwood, Hackman, Freeman), Dances With Wolves (another Kostner movie), Legends of the Fall (not a western but similar - Brad Pitt and Anthony Hopkins), maybe toss in the Young Guns franchise and Tombstone. That is not a lot movies there. I wish more were made. Open Range was fantastic!

I'm a big Western fan as well. Mostly Clint/Leone. A couple of the better John Wayne flicks are in the mix. Even some of old Gary Cooper stuff..
You guys may like Bone Tomahawk which is new film - mostly a western, with a slight bit of horrific cannibalism here and there..

And as discussed earlier - Empire of The Summer Moon is coming out on film in the coming year. Rise and fall of The Commanches (and Quanah Parker) who were the most fierce of all Indian tribes. They made life terrifying for western settlers.
If you like a good read, the book is fantastic..

Already on the list- thanks! :toast:

Finally got around to seeing The Revenant. Absolutely loved it (and yeah, that bear scene was amazing). But am I the only one who had a hell of a time understanding some of the dialogue, particularly early on? My wife and I were both like WTF for about the first 30 minutes. It was probably just the accents combined with my sound setup that is way too loud on action and effects. But I haven't had that hard of a time understanding dialogue in an English speaking movie in a long, long time.

Disappearing dialogue movies is a universal problem with these modern home cinema sound setups.
I go right to the subtitles if I'm missing chunks of dialogue.

Yeah, like I said dialogue is constantly getting overpowered in my sound setup. But it was just a whole other level with this one. We actually did turn on the closed captioning for a bit but it ended up being more annoying than it was worth.

My friends and I have an ongoing joke about this...

We always say "DAMMIT DANNY ELFMAN" due to it being most prevalent in some movie he did.

Music overpowered all dialogue.

So I picked up The Revenant last night, and man, talk about a someone gritting their teeth the whole movie. It is a really good movie that I have to say I would give an award to just for the film making. At first I wasn't sure if my wife would make it through the first 30 gruesome minutes, but after the initial arrows through eye balls and a bear mauling she made it lol. If that is truly what it was like for Hugh Glass, then God bless him lol.
