Titans Talk - Home for all things Tennessee Titans

I think in the final analysis, Sundquist's motivation for writing such an article is worth pondering. He didn't get the job and he writes a "you're making a mistake" type article. As I said previously, we already knew the coaching search was a sham and the only take away I really had from this article is the painful r minder of that. Now, after a day's reflection, I also take away that this makes Sundquist seem petty and a sore loser. Of course those take aways are independent of the fact that we have made several poor coaching decisions since the Robinson hire. In fact, we made a great hire with him mainly by accident - since he would agree to keep Mularkey.

This includes some real insight into how the Titans function.

The fact that many of you are writing it off as lame or sour grapes is weird. It may not be the most earth-shattering article ever (did you really expect him to burn down any chance of getting a job in the NFL in the future?) but it's still an interesting read. It may come from a place of frustration (at not getting the job), but does that make it any less valid?

And, sadly, it confirms one of the most widely held opinions around here: ownership isn't willing to do whatever it takes to get better.

Why would this guy not be upset?

If he considered himself to be a legit candidate, and he goes through the process only to find out that they intend on keeping Mularkey from the get go, he SHOULD be insulted. He felt like he had his time wasted.

That is like going to a fortune 500 company, and them still paying you what a mom and pop store pays you.

Eh, if it was really a "you're making a mistake" or sour grapes type article, there would have been some implication of Robinson, but there wasnt. He cant write an article and say the Titans are broken....they knew they were broken but this, this, and this, were important to them regardless, and they chose a different GM, and not take some heat for having interviewed and been passed over. He couldnt, however, have even written the article if he didnt interview. I dont think he sounded like he wanted to get back at the titans, it seems like he gave his honest opinion of the situation.

If you are a titans fan, and that article doesn't bother you on some level, then you need to get your head examined.

Of course he would be upset. Did anyone suggest otherwise?

My point is that some people in this thread have suggested the fact that he's upset about not getting the job somehow invalidates what he wrote. Why would it?

He came to the Titans with proposed solutions. Maybe they were great solutions, maybe they weren't. But what he was told was essentially that the Titans preferred to take the easy road and remain mediocre.

Then he wrote about the experience.

I don't see why we should dismiss what he wrote.

Yet people are saying stuff like this:

Maybe this guy is just salty about not getting the job.

:troll:

You're using an obvious troll post to prove your point..? Dude... seriously...

I disagree that he would throw Robinson under the bus more. He has to at least pretend his viewpoint isn't predicated on not getting the job. But why write the article in the first place if it isn't to "expose" the process? And I agree, this article should bug the heck out of every Titans fan.

My bad for not interpreting your post correctly.

Just substitute one of the several non-trolling posts in this thread that say basically the same thing and my overall point still stands.

which is what makes the article worthless, tell us something we dont already know...

Even if we already assumed every single detail Sundquist wrote, him confirming those details would still have value. He was actually there.

And we certainly didn't know everything. We didn't know that ownership is claiming to be scared about in-fighting among coaches and that's how they justified the Mularkey decision to GM candidates.

Sundquist strongly hinted that the Titans are trying to copy another team's specific model (he doesn't name the team) and mentioned he advised against that. That's notable.

Like I said, it's definitely not anything groundbreaking, but it's perhaps the best insight into ownership we're likely to get this year. It's certainly not worthless.

I can see how one could appreciate confirmation of something they only to that point thought was true, but youre really no better off for him sharing his experience.

The juice is not worth the squeeze.

I disagree completely. We all had our assumptions and thoughts because of the results, but we didn't have a lot of reasons behind them.

You act like this article is subtraction by addition. It is very interesting to get into the mind set of how they conduct interviews, the questions they asks, the vibe they put out to candidates, their acceptance criteria, their reasoning behind their past and future decisions.

It is also very interesting to see him lay down his philosophy for this team and his approach in how to identify issues with the organization and on the various different levels.

With that knowledge, and the result of him not getting the job, sets a bar for Robinson. I'm now very curious to see what philosophy Robinson has comparatively. It would tell a lot of what the organization values in that regard.

I found the whole thing very insightful.

Sundquist sounds like an orange flavored soft drink.

I'm totally with Toronto on this one. I wish more people would share their sour grapes. Who care's, the more negative press the better chance of change. Obviously the NFL thinks Titans ownership has major issues right now. But the good ole Titans fans have to eat another s#$! sandwich and pretend it's filet mignon.

If this were NY or Boston nobody on the board would give ownership benefit of the doubt on anything at this point....
