Let's get one thing Straight, Bettis let the Colts back into the game with his fumble which should have taken them up by 10.

And they can blame Harper's wife all they want, he turned the wrong way on Big Ben.

Puck how come Reggie Bush's jersey is so much redder than Leinart's in your sig?

I was wondering when someone would ask that :ha:

apparently the lighting is different
one is probably in daylight
while the other under artificial lights

ok,... i went and looked at both raw pics

Matt is in daylight
Reggie is just at dusk with the lights on
--(I did brighten Reggie a little but only so you could (kinda) see his face)
if you look closely at Reggie's helmet you can see 3 lights and 'skyglow' - near the back of his helmet at the logo you can see the sunsetting

take different colored articles of clothing and look at them under sunlight and artificial / flourescent lighting and you'll see a big difference 9 times out of 10

I would say 22/38 for 290 yards and a TD was "decent" if not more than decent.
I didn't say his stats weren't decent. I said he didn't play a decent game. Not compared to what he normally does . He struggled for most of the game and rarely was able to string together a drive. And in clutch time, he threw a game deciding INT (after which the refs promptly gave him the world's biggest mulligan).

The OL gave Manning no time to throw the ball and the Steelers shut down the Indy running game. Manning was also sacked 5 times in the game. Not too many QBs that have that much pressure on them are able to throw for almost 300 yards.
Manning calls the plays. Why didn't he audible into better protection calls? Why didn't he call more short drops? Why didn't he get Edge more carries (he did average 4.3 YPC) to negate the blitz?

If Manning can get so much credit for being the QB as well as the OC on the field when things are going well, then he damned well deserves the blame when they go so badly...

Add in that the Indy defense spotted the Steelers 14 points and allowed the Steelers to control the clock with a 10 minute advantage in TOP Manning did well to get Indy back into the game.
That wouldn't have happened if the Colts offense didn't 3-and-out on 3 of their first 4 posessions and punt on all 4. But I guess it's not Peyton's fault their offense didn't do anything. Hey, wait...

Of course Starkiller also said McNair had a decent game in the Music City Miracle win after Mcnair was 13-24 for 76 yards, 1 INT, 0 TD.
And I stand by that. McNair was never the focus of the Titans offense in 1999. He never had any big passing numbers. And Fisher went ultraconservative against the dominant Buffalo D. And still, unlike Manning, McNair still managed some big, game changing plays.

Again, I'm not talking stats. I'm talking about overall play.

Jeff, the articles you posted have some great digs! I especially liked article #2 which points out ..."his feet were happy..." :ha:

Soxcat has a good point when he writes "The talking heads can say all they want about Manning. After all they are the ones that make him God when he is winning games and the goat when they lose." It seemed like the heads were convinced that Manning had grown as a leader, and his only Kryptonite was Tom Brady. I honestly can't put all the blame for the loss on Manning, but I think he's finally been exposed for what he is: a bona fide choker, with or without the Pats. When he complains about protection, he admits that he's a one-trick pony: a pocket passer and little else.

Why are manning standards so high?

You guys don't have those same high standards for anyone else. Why is it that peyton manning has to verify himself by winning it all? Steve mcnair won't ever win a super bowl should we have hundreds of posts bashing him? How many super bowls did rich gannon win? Trent green? Daunte culpepper? Mcnabb?

There are only 4 active QBs with a super bowl ring. Brad johnson, brett favre, brady and warner. Three of those guys are on their last leg. If only 4 QBs have won the super bowl that means that almost thirty starting QBs out there have not. So why is manning so special? Go look at john elway's super bowl stats in his first three super bowls. He sucked!

Do you guys hate manning because he is so good? You pathetic lives are filled with such failures that you don't like a guy who is that good at something? You have low self esteem and your self loathing somehow gets a break by watching someone good fall short? Why don't you losers use that energy to bash this football team of ours and it's pathetic performance this year. That would be more contsructive and maybe more therapeutic.

Haha that was bothering me for a while. I thought it might be a different stye jersey or something. But you are right lighting does make a huge difference.

A team first philosophy?

The team-first philosophy.
---------------

Yeah those colts have really had trouble winning games the past 3 seasons. 12-4 in 2003, 12-4 in 2004 and 14-2 in 2005. Too bad they don't know how to win football games. Manning has won 66% of his games since his rookie year, missed the playoffs once in the last 7 seasons and won 78% of his games the last 3 years. That's including playoffs! I think whatever philosophy the colts are practicing is working.

What if manning lead his team to just 4 winning seasons out of 11? We would say he sucks? Well jeff fisher has coached the oilers/titans to just 4 winning seasons out of 11 and some of you think he is hall of fame material. I guess mediocrity is more appealing to some.

And if McNair had been the Colt's QB in that game the Colt's would have been lucky to score a single point. Was Pittsburg a "dominant" defense Sunday? Did the Colts have the option of going "ultraconservative"?
You put the weight of the world on Manning and even when he almost brings his team back with a 290 yard passing day against unbelievable pressure all game and you say he wasn't decent. McNair hands the ball off all game and throws 5 yard passes, doesn't even break the 100 yard mark and yet because he got lucky and had a miracle play to win the game he is now decent. Sorry, if we don't get that miracle play and win that game McNair's playoff record is crap. Remember how McNair chocked and lost the next year. Good thing for McNair the best pass of the game against the Bills was thrown by Wycheck.

Get another thing straight. The Steelers blew through the Colt's OL on the Colt's series before the Bettis fumble giving Manning absolutely no chance to move the Colt's down field.

As far as I'm concerned if everyone wants to blame Manning totally for the loss people are showing their complete lack of football knowledge and understanding. No other QB in the game would have done better under the circumstances. As I said before, if the Colts some how came back to tie and later win that game (and they were only a FG away from OT) that game would have gone down in history as a playoff classic and Manning would have been the hero. For years fans would have been talking about how Manning's leadership took over on 4th down as he insisted on going for the first down instead of punting.

Peoples football IQs drop about 30 points on this board if the discussion involves Manning. I understand the division rival causes negative bias towards him, and the obvious homerism most of us will have, but I have to agree with you completely. Anyone who watched that game and didnt realize how terrible the entire offense was doesnt know anything about football. Manning certainly wasnt great, but he was as good or better than any other QB could have been under the intense pressure he had on him all day. And anyone talking about the 4th down play is just obvious looking for something to ***** about, because that was clearly the right call to be made at that time, and it was a conversion, so what is the big deal with that.

Manning's regular season brings on the expectation he can play to that level in the postseason and he rarely has. No, it wasn't entirely his fault the Colts offense played poorly but is he above criticism?

We can't know how a Brady (or any other QB) would have played that game because most QBs have an offensive coordinator calling the plays. And you can bet some of those plays would have been designed to slow down that pass rush. He didn't utilize one of the best rushers in the game nearly as well as he should have and made a number of bad decisions throughout the game.

Of course he isnt above criticism, he didnt play a great game by any means. But its just amazing how the media, and this board, and wherever the entire emphasis is on manning and not the kicker, or not Wayne dropping a catchable pass in the endzone, or not the Oline not being able to pick up a blitz for anything. They all played their part in the loss, and certainly Manning did too, but from everyones reaction you would think Peyton was the only one who made any kind of mistakes and the rest of the team played flawless. He is getting criticized for converting on a 4th down conversion for gods sake because it was somehow disrespectful, its ridiculous in my opinion.

I think everyone who watched that game realizes that it wasn't all on Manning. But I think it is also wrong to think no other QB in the league could have done better.

A more mobile QB possibly could have done better, but any stationary guy was going to get destroyed with that kind of blocking. There were some opportunities for him to check down and he didnt, so again, I certainly agree he made his mistakes, but I think there were plenty of issues to go around, thats all.

Wow...your venom for the Titans is spilling over to our reveling in the Colt's failure? We know the Titans have issues...major issues...jeez...but give us all a break on the "picking on poor Peyton" routine. The guy has been setup by the media as the best thing to strap on cleats at the QB position and thanks to Daddy's association with DirecTV we get to see him between quarters as well [although I do love that commercial].

Peyton is a victim of his own desire to be smarter than the game. His antics behind center I think work in spite of himself. The fact his he is an amazingly accurate QB with tons of talent. However he cannot deliver in the games that count...the "Big Stage" games. He did not do it at UT and he has yet to do it in the NFL. How can a team that was running the table like it no big deal toss up the lemon they did on Sunday? And if you defend his finger pointing then so be it. He is supposed to be a leader...not just the captain...and I don't think the team rallies around him like you have seen with Brady, Montana, Elway, etc.

No, it would have been forever known as the game as the refs gave the Dolts a FREE 8 points and that's how they stole the game.

Look, I'm comparing McNair that day to his norm that year and his role in the offense. And I'm comparing Manning's effort on Sunday to his norm in 2005. I'm not saying Manning didn't have a better day passing in those 2 games. Nor am I saying that, in a vaccum, that I'd rather have McNair's stats over Manning's. But relative to their separate situations, I'd label McNair's performance decent and Manning's as sub-par.

You didn't respond to my point that Manning is calling all the plays on the field. Why didn't he call plays that would punish the blitz? He had the one long drive in the 1st half that ended in a FG, where they had a ton of short and intermediate gains. That was a well executed drive and Manning was never sacked. He was capable of calling those kind of plays all day long. Who else do you blame for giving up on that strategy?

Plus, I'm not going to ignore Manning's game sealing INT just because the refs bent over for him.

The fact that Manning gets so much freedom to call the plays is still a coaching decision. If the coaches arent happy with his playing calling it should be discussed, Tom Moore is the OC, not Manning. This was a bad loss for the entire team, they were out played and outcoached in almost all areas of the game.

No one here is saying that Manning isn't an excellent QB. Most of the time, he's arguably the league's best passer.

That having been said, he also has a long-running trend of choking in crunch time. Look at his 6 playoff losses, and tell me he's played well in them. You could probably make an argument that he was OK in the loss to Miami a few years ago. But he was shut down in each of the other 5 losses. And it's not like that trend isn't a continuation from his time at UT, where he could never once beat Florida. He just isn't a winner.

Do Titans fans take pleasure in seeing him fail? Absolutely! I have no problem admitting I do. I love seeing Lucy pull the ball away from him on an annual basis come playoff time. It's like clockwork. Just write it in on your new calendar for some weekend in January. It's not a matter of if. It's just a matter of when.
