Titans Talk - Home for all things Tennessee Titans

This draft went offense heavy...hope that a collective of Mariota, Sankey, Cobb, Fowler, Andrews, Wright, DGB, Hunter, Walker & Lewan can form a solid offensive unit for years to come (not betting on Sankey, Andrews or Hunter but they're young and worth mentioning)...so next draft, go defense heavy (and 1/2 OL picks)

Either a NT, CB, FS or RT in the 1st (move Poutasi to OG)

I thought Mariotas accuracy was off today. Hopefully this game was a fluke and he finds it next week.

I was literally sick with the way they were playing in the 1st half, the Titans of Ole. MM was brutally beaten up but was a warrior till the end. The OL and our CB's are so bad they've pretty much become a joke. If Warmack is out for awhile, we are screwed.
I thought Meredith did a decent job filling in for Warmack. Poutasi was straight garbage.

Mariota held on to it too long today as well. He was being too careful because his wrs weren't wide open like last week and in college. This is something he's going to have to adjust to. Giving his wrs chance to make plays.

Also he looked rattled in the first half from getting hit. It affected his accuracy and decision making ability.
It is not Mariota's fault when our receivers can't uncover. It has been a problem last season and it still is this season. Our Wrs can't beat man coverage because they are neither fast enough nor strong enough. If DGB were able to run routes he would have been a big help for MM. Hunter is not strong enough and gets pushed around.

He had some bad throws for sure. At the end of the day though he's a rookie in his 2nd ever game. And he got zero help from the rest of the offense (and defense for that matter).
You got it. We need to give Mariota some credit for being tough out there. I have seen veteran QBs turning in some really horrible games when they had a defender in their grill on every throw and getting knocked down on every other.

Imagine this game with Locker under center. He would have broken about every bone in his body.
Headcase #10 would have been on suicide watch and Fitz would have thrown his fifth INT. Mettenberger would have been sacked eleven times.

McNair probably would have thrown for 350 yards and 4TDs while playing with a bruised sternum and a couple of cracked ribs while telling the Browns D to bring it.

I don't even think Aaron Rodgers could have done anything with the pathetic performance behind our offensive line. I do feel a major concern is mariotas fumbling issues. Other than that between our wrs not being able to get open and our Oline not being able to block forced mariota into trying to do too much and holding onto the football longer than he had too.

If Whiz is such a great coach, he's gotta figure out how to keep his QBs healthy, he gets them absolutely KILLED.

Give the browns some credit. It didn't matter what we did, they still gave us pressure. The game could have been worse if MM wasn't QB.

I'm glad MM came out with his head on his shoulders. He needs to learn to throw the ball away when nothing is there.

Your comments about MM - This is all bad, but this is something MM can learn by. He seems the type of player that learns by his mistakes.

Typical rookie mistakes. He'll get over them.

I just finally got a chance to watch this game and I have to say, you guys way over sold how badly we played. I thought the Titans ABSOLUTELY should have won this game, and easily. 5 plays go differently and this would have been a Titans blowout.

The line:
Titans win yardage: 385-274
Titans win number of plays: 74-47 (that's almost double!)
Titans win time of possesion: 35:11 - 24:49
Titans win 1st downs: 21-13!

Overall a fairly dominant performance by the Titans. But wait, theres more...

The penalties in the first half killed us. Let's be honest. 8 for 80 yards. But wait a second....
We only commited ONE penalty for 5 yards in the entire second half.
Silver lining?
We regrouped at halftime and started to get our s*** together. Kudos to the team for rebounding from one bad half of football and calming down in the second half. I don't know about you but I view the turnaround as growth.

Lets go to those five plays that decided the game.

The two Manzeil bombs are the first two. The Browns couldn't sustain a drive to save their lives against our D. Al Woods looking like a beast! Without the two bombs Manziel is 6/13 for 62 yards! For the whole game. We shut them down through the air except for the two plays where our BACKUP cornerbacks got beat. Stress the Backup. Mccourty is back next week. Let's see what happens then. Eliminate those two plays and we already have a win.

The fumbles. I'm talking about the two first half drive killers by West and Mariota. Those don't happen and who knows? The Titans score on both or one of them? Lets say one and now that takes it to 21-14 Titans.

The kick return. Good god. Yes, Travis Benjamin was a world class sprinter but there is no excuse for that. Take that one play away. 21-7 Titans.

Talk about resilience, Way to go Titans. Mariota and Mcluster consistently pushed the offense forward the entire game in the face of non stop blitzing by the Browns.
Could we have done a lot of things better. Yes.
Did this look like a young team making fixable mistakes but overall dominating. Hell yes.

Stains not up 3 scores till 4Q and it is a different story. They made themselves 1 dimensional to minimize #2's chance of screwing things up. Titans were able to stop the run cause they knew it was coming.

But that is why stats alone never tell the story in football

These two games are the first time I can remember not being able to watch completely back to back.

Week one I was tailgating for Cowboys SNF and caught the first two TD's. Seems to me we had a complete game on all sides of the ball.

Week two I caught most of the first half. Had a funeral to attend so didn't catch any more. Haven't even looked at highlights i'm so sick. But, seems we just got completely hammered.

What good can we take out of week 2? @Dangermode with a good post on this.
Was the comeback almost a real comeback in second half yesterday? (Will watch recording after work tonight)
I saw Poutasi (sp?) completely miss an assignment in first half. Did he and the O-line look any better in the second half?

Going to be a long week waiting to see which Titans are the real Titans.

and last but not least. Let's go Jets!!!

I think if we had another quarter to play I would have liked our chances. We didn't have much time to work with for what we were doing most of the 2nd half (actually running the ball decently to set up the pass).

On another note, if we did play another quarter, not sure if Mariota would last. He was getting knocked around quite a bit.

You're incorrect more than you think here. Mariota is not used to making throws in tight windows. Therefore he doesn't think someone is open because he is so used to seeing his wrs wide open all the time in college. In the nfl he's not going to have easy throws all the time. He's going to have to take the risk of putting it in right windows. I think he's so concerned with not throwing an int its causing him to get sacked more than he should.

Harry Douglas stinks like his women's deodorant. He needs to step aside and let DGB in the game.
DGB doesn't know what he's doing. I'm convinced of that. When Wright got hurt DGB went in the game. He then proceeded to run to the wrong side of the formation and three guys were yelling at him to get to the other side of the field. Later on Mariota threw a ball down the sideline for him and he just stopped running.
