I actually thought the F13 reboot was decent fun. I honestly liked it better than several of the original run. Didn't really mind RZ Halloween either. Elm Street was indeed terrible though.

I didn't "mind" the F13 reboot as a simple, standalone film - just the idea that it's a reboot, and it killed the sequel cycle of the original film. So subsequent F13 films will be either sequels to this F13 (ugh) or worse, further attempts to reboot F13.
There is of course always the dreaded prequel option as well.
Why would anyone care? Fair enough question - but as horrible as some of F13 sequels can be, there are some good ones in there as well.

Cruds mocks, but... if they stayed more true to the style of the game,he'd be on board.

RE is one of the video games that I played back when I had PS.
Decent game - yeah, but they could take 15 years off making any zombie films and I'd be just fine with that - let alone ones associated with video games..

Yeah I hear ya. But wasn't the last F13 of the original run basically "Jason Goes to Space"? I think they were about tapped lol.

Yeah, I only saw the first RE movie but it wasn't even close to capturing what made the original games so great.
Yep...the first one isn't very good at all but it's just a first step on a long story arc. Red Queen is the real villain of the series- the 'Resident Evil'- but doesn't appear again until #5. There's one more left to make.

Also, I have absolutely no idea why the Alice In Wonderland theme was adopted into the film series.

I see some movies from the 80's and think "they should remake this with better effects and action, BUT to cleanup the story and writing... pace it properly."

That is a thought that never comes to me when watching those old films.
And they have yet to improve a single 80's slashie. Not one.
"Better fx and action" means ditching those wondrous practical Savini type effects and replacing regular folks with choreographed model-fu.
"Cleaning up the story and pacing" LOL - to a certainty they will make it worse now. Code for "make it generic, modern horror film #4278"

Freddy v was after that - and J to Space takes place 500 years in the future.
That's a lot of room to squeeze more Jason into.
And if you make F13 2009 a sequel instead of a reboot it cozies right up to all the other films and becomes part of the story instead of a forgotten one off - which is that film's fate - done and done.

More films are coming no matter what.
Continue to tell the story vs continually taking two steps back..

Wow - I know who to contact if I need RE film knowledge. Avv comes thru!

So, you've never seen Krull, apparently...

I've seen Krull.. Did they remake it?
Not an 80's slashie either way.
In that 80's sci realm I've seen a few of the remakes like Clash of The Titans, Conan, Total Recall etc. Epic cheeser originals w remakes that were immediately forgettable..

Clash was a wanted reboot... in some ways it did look cleaner and wasn't too bad. But the claymation of the original will always hold a special place in my heart.

Conan isn't a reboot anyone wanted. Rebooting it simply a failed attempt at a cashgrab. It was successful enough and solid. There isn't much to it you could immediately think "that needs to be updated".

Clash... I'm ok with that reboot. Let's pretend the sequel never happened.

Sleepaway Camp is one of the few that got it right.
They had an epic first first film and a couple of odd sequels that have gained popularity over the years. When the time came to make a modern Sleepaway they opted to do "Return to Sleepaway Camp" (instead of a remake) with all the original people but a new story leaving the door open to continue the tradition. Everyone loved "Return" and it fits nicely in the overall story..

Total Recall, I could go either way... a reboot isn't the worst thing, but it wasn't necessary. That movie was fine, as it was. The story was fine and the effects haven't been completely dated yet.

Also... a reboot should never be worse than the original. TR was.

A revisit... I believe that is how Ghostbusters SHOULD have been done.

That's it in a nutshell.

I'm sure I saw the remake at least twice but can't remember any of it. I'll never seek it out to watch again - but I will watch the original again someday. To enjoy that Harryhausen charm..

Strictly speaking horror, the reboots are never better than the original. (I wouldn't call The Thing or The Fly a reboot).
Maybe that's the case for Marvel etc, but that whole culture is about reboots..

The Conjuring 2.

It was good, and what I expected. Only see in the theatres if you're a fan of the genre. It was a good time imo.

Next week...Independence Day 2
