Titans Talk - Home for all things Tennessee Titans

Feel pretty confident that we will spend a pick on LB and DB this year. DL is a possibility too. We need another Edge defender for depth.

We do have Weaver who flashed in pre-season as a rookie last yr until he broke his leg...so he is almost like a new draft pick....I agree though you can't have too many edge guys.

Let me preface this by saying I don't really want this to happen. I'm just saying I think it's more possible then we think.

But I have a sneaking suspicion J-Rob and Vrabel are making post-Tannehill plans. They were at Cincinnati's pro day today, and a QB that everyone believes will be available at number 26 is Cincinnati's QB Desmond Ridder (I agree this would be a reach for us).

Here's the big connection though - Vrabel and Cincinnati's coach, Luke Fickell are bros. Fickell was actually Vrabel's best man. So I am sure they both have been discussing Ridder at length and that Fickell had been talking him up.

I don't love Ridder. He reminds me of a less talented Mariota with a little bit of Alex Smith sprinkled in. Just saying this may be more likely to happen than we may think.

I hadn't given Jelani Woods much thought until the combine. A 4.61 40 is extremely impressive at his size. He also had the most bench press reps at the position. And he already has a ton of experience as the primary blocking TE at OK. State, as well. I'm very impressed with his athleticism. One of the highest upside TEs in the draft, imo.

Trey McBride is still the dream as his combination of blocking and receiving ability is unmatched in this class. Wydermyer is probably the safest bet to be a highly productive receiving TE (but his blocking pretty much sucks). But if we don't take them in round 1 or trade into round 2, they won't be available for us. Jelani Woods would be my preference at that point.
I LOVE Jelani Woods. I started watching some of his tape over the weekend, and I was like "where has this guy been!?"

The strength and athleticism jump off the screen. He must be a terrible blocker or have some sort of off the field issue, because I don't see any holes in his game at all. Why do people have them ranked as a 3rd or 4th round pick? He looks like TE1 in this draft to me.

He only has 1 year of decent production and it wasn't a particularly great season. So that's largely why he has gone unnoticed. You can tell he is a bit raw, but from a talent standpoint, he's definitely top 2-3.

Blocking wise, he has a lot of experience there, as he was the primary blocking TE at OK State when they had Chubba Hubbard. I'd say he's probably one of the better blocking TEs in the draft.

Mock has us trading up to 14 to take QB Howell...not crazy about this one

Honestly I think that Ridder is a dark horse for us at 26th as well. The Titans need to draft QB of the future and Ridder fits what the Titans need in a QB very well. Replacing Tannehill's cap hitwhit a rookie deal pretty much solves all of Tennessee's cap situation and while the QB class is better next season that is mostly due to the Hall, Stroud, and Rattler. All three will likely go top 15 and thus likely outside of the Titans draft range without trading up.

The only thing that I really hate about Ridder is his mechanics which is a little loopy. I think this leads to his intermittent accerracy issues. With that being the case sitting Ridder behind Tannehill for a season and focus on his mechanics maybe a good plan especially if we can trade down and grab another day 2 pick.

I'd still rather go WR though

Hall? Assuming you mean young?

And Rattler will need a big year to get back into 1st round consideration. He also has some character issues. Rumor is that many of his teammates didn't like him. I do like Jake Haener a lot too, even though he is on the small side. Elite arm strength and very good athletic ability.

I want no part of Ridder in the first. If he is there later in the 2nd and we want to move up, then so be it. But no 1st round QB please.

Age is one factor as he'll be 24 this year. He's also a bit tall for an NFL blocking TE which will make it hard for him to get leverage in blocks. His route running needs a lot of work. That being said, he could definitely be a top 5 TE in this league with his athletic traits. He likely won't be there by the time we pick in the 3rd.

Titans OL Pass Protection Grades Last Year:

Taylor Lewan: 71.1

Ben Jones: 66.3

Jamarco Jones: 54.6

Nate Davis: 49.5

Aaron Brewer: 48.7

Dillon Radunz: 39.5

I cant imagine we don't go OL in the 1st.

I was playing with one of those mock draft simulators and forced this scenario to ask what you guys would think about this (I realize there's a draft simulator thread already but this question fits here better. Also, I didn't specifically set out to take 3 Cincinnati players in a row, just the first 2).

What would you guys think about drafting Alec Pierce, if we draft Ridder in the first? We have seen with Burrow and Chase how familiarity between QB and WR can carry over to the NFL. Pierce would also give us the speed element we have been desperately lacking for several years. He ran a 4.33 40 yard dash at the combine.

I like Alec Pierce quite a bit. One of my top 3rd round WRs. Nice size, speed, and production. Good blocker as well.

No 1st round Qbs though, no matter who falls to us. The fact that we're less than a month til the draft and we don't have a consensus top QB and no QB is a lock to go in the first 5 picks, tells me that this QB draft class is very poor.

If we don’t make another free agency move I’d say we need to be looking at OT/OG with our first.

Priorities for me:
1 OL
2 WR (speed)
3 TE
4 QB
5 Edge

I totally agree…in the great arms race of the AFC we need to be able to hold onto the ball and eat clock and improving the OL helps both the running game and passing game….That being said I would go BPA between OL and WR
