Vravel has not fired a single assistant the entire time he’s been coach. Not one.

Look, I hate the hire. But I won’t fault him for not firing a coach to this point. So far the team has performed well and there really hasn’t been a pressing need to fire anyone. I am not even sure Bowen should get fired. But hiring him as DC is bad. We can hammer Vrabel for that...not sure we can hammer him for not firing anyone yet.

I doubt many fans have been impressed with the special teams coordinator for the past two seasons, but Aukerman remains. Honestly, of all the coaches on the staff, the fact he still has a job amazes me.

That maybe one good example. Not sure he has had fireable performance, but maybe.

I dunno. The kicking and punting (when kern out) has been abysmal under Aukerman. And the return game hasnt been anything to write home about. Special teams has been a weakness for a while.
Defense was really only a weakness in 2020.

With this "promotion", Titans had better improve drastically on D, or I jump on the fire Vrabel bandwagon.

This has to be the worst coaching move I've ever seen.
I can't for the life of me figure how this bad of a D, with a guy they all admitted was doing the job without the title, could possible have led to even a consideration for the job yet alone actually giving it to him.

I feel really sorry for Thill, Henry and the rest of the O who bust their a$$es to make a top offense only to get let down time and again by this s**t D.

So let's summarize so we understand...

We wouldn’t pursue Pees, whom the D played well under last year because Vrabel didn't want to bring him out of retirement again.
But he comes out of retirement to work on our former OC staff in Atlanta

Instead we promote the LB coach to DC who didn't get the title and the D regressed under him

Lol

They were so bad, I don't know if "regressed" really displays how poor they were all season.

Remember, we know nothing. How do we know Pees didn’t agree with Vrabel that is was time for Bowen to take over and he would go help the kid in Atlanta ?

In all seriousness.... why do y’all keep ignoring the personnel issues on defense? They weren’t small issues. Bowen might suck. But last season isn’t a fair judge of whether he will succeed or not. With the injuries and lack of talent and depth on defense last season they were going to suck.

Why do some of you just flat ignore that?

I think it's because due to the salary cap, the Titans don't have a lot of money to address the players on defense.

The Titans defense was abysmal last season, and we're keeping the same DC to manage what is going to be mostly the same players.

Our offense otoh did great. Most of those players will be back, so an internal hire at OC isn't as critical, especially when our O suffered personnel injuries that were well managed.

Those adjustments weren't made on defense. I understand why people aren't thrilled to watch the same thing possibly happen again by keeping the same DC and players while expecting a different outcome.

It’s a fans assumption we can’t add players. No way that true. The Titans will find a way to add on defense.

Such a titans move. Defence needs a fresh set of eyes in the coaches room and they do this. OC is fine I get it no need to rock the boat, but this defence needs a whole change of playbook and scheme. We were weak on every aspect of defence, coordinators have been sacked for less failings and u turns in performance.

I wanted to compare the 19' and 20' defensive rosters because I'm not really buying the "lack of personnel" argument for the 20' defensive failures. Either that, or there is a SERIOUS overestimate of the value lost.

guys on both 19' and 20'
Daquan Jones, Simmons (late start 19'), Jayon Brown, Evans, Landry, Butler (IR early 19'), AJ25 (hurt 20' and part of 19'), byard, Vaccaro. that's 9 starters.

backups: Dickerson, Bates, Roberson, Long, Tye Smith (1/2 19', 1/2 20') and Hooker.
Probably missing some.

The actual roster differences (starters):
19' Casey, Woodyard (not really a starter), and Ryan (constantly complained about as a liability in 19' after Aj25 and Butler went down)

20' Desmond King (late), Clowney, and Beasley (both bums)

The roster defensively was not all that different and I can't see Woodyard, Casey and Ryan being the difference with these numbers:

19' - 21st in yds, 12th in pts, 24th against the pass, 12th against the run, and notably 74/204 on 3rd down

20' - 28th in yds, 24th in pts, 29 against the pass, 19th against the run, and VERY notably 111/214 on 3rd down.

We’re gonna have to pull some Moneyball type magic to upgrade this defensive roster significantly. Honestly, with this offense at its peak, I’d be fine loading up this defense with a bunch of older former star vet defenders and trying to squeeze the last ounce of greatness out of them.
I’d settle for an ounce of mediocrity.

This is very true. The main difference was no Pees or Coombs.

That's an interesting take. Look how much we got out of Woodyard when many thought he was done. Had Wake not got hurt early 2 years ago, he could have contributed. You'd have to sign quite a few to cheap deals to hope 1 or 2 click.

Wonder if we resign King. He seemed to be pretty solid while we had him. I seem to recall Butler's contract was structured with an out this year with no dead cap.
King is a slot guy and Butler an outside guy. Their PFF differential was pretty big in favor of Butler. I would not weaken an already poor secondary like this. Find a way to restructure some contracts, like Butler. Cutting our better players isn’t going to help us.

I don’t think people are disagreeing that personnel played a role, it surely did. But, the drop off of “good” players is an indication that coaching dropped off as well.

I will be shocked if we don’t restructure several contracts to get some breathing room. Plus, we won’t know the cap number for another week of so.

The salary cap isn't real. If Jrob wants to add pieces to the defense he will be able to.

We need to add a pass rusher in FA and then go rounds 1 - 3 best defensi e guy available. We need to upgrade this personal if we are going to have Bowen running it full time. Great players may make his trash scheme look better
