It's not about catching really. Derek had/has perfectly fine catching ability. But he had an extremely limited route tree and with his size there really isn't much you can do about that. It was basically all screens. Granted those were generally effective when deployed properly.
Average points per game for an NFL team is 23. So if one player accounted for 17-20 a game, that's pretty damn good.
And over his tenure, only 2018/22-23 were below 20. 19-21 they put up a lot more points.
